And since mentoring can be as simple as providing or receiving emotional support in times of need, sometimes people can be mentors or mentees without even realizing it. Table assignments are often predetermined by computer software but other techniques can be used to determine the groups each attendee participates in. Mentees reported that the event successfully provided perspective on their questions and concerns. It was a tremendous networking and shared learning opportunity. A typical event may call for tables of four to 10. They often exchange business cards and possibly additional information for a follow-up meeting. The event organizer gives up control of the actual content of the interactions, but that is a small price to pay.
Step 6 Create individual schedules for each mentor and mentee. The moderator will place time limits on the participants interactions, telling them when the time intervals have expired. Leadership training is important, but mentorships can provide ongoing support, not only for when supervisors are faced with challenging situations, but also for when it's smooth sailing. To make pairs, the goal is to maximize the total number of content and methodologic areas or other features you select like gender or department that match between a mentor and a mentee. Seniority has benefits; we let our mentors keep their seats and mentees move around the room. But networking at events or trying to approach people you admire at work -- that's just awkward. We are encouraged by the informal interactions that were fostered and look forward to improving the follow-up rate with future targeted events.
